Baseball is being played, people E-mail

Just a reminder that preseason baseball started this week, and the MLB Network is carrying games pretty much every day at 1 p.m Eastern. (Flipping through my digital cable guide also shows that they've got some evening game broadcasts scheduled in the near future.) I should have thrown this post up before the Braves/Mets affair yesterday, but thanks to a soggy field, you didn't miss much anyway. David Wright, Jason Bay and Jose Reyes (who tripled in an intra-squad game on Monday) all rode pine. The biggest star on the field was probably Nate McLouth. Or, hell, it might have been Jason Heyward. The 20-year-old super prospect was on base three times and swiped a bag. Please note: Heyward is already included in the Yahoo player database. As is Pedro Alvarez, whose Buccos play the Yankees on MLB Network in today's afternoon game.

Alvarez is mighty tempting in my dynasty league right now. As a Pirates fan who probably hears plenty of the guy, what's the word here? Aramis is holding down the fort for me but that can only last so long. Keith Law's lower than most ranking is the only thing keeping me from dropping Bumgarner for him today.

Erich, unless you're making a run at the title this year and need the roster space, I'd say do it.

Pedro came into camp last year a little tubbier than the Pirates wanted and then underperformed at A-ball. Halfway through the summer, he got promoted to Double-A anyway and proceeded to lose the fat and absolutely destroy the baseball to the tune of a 1.009 OPS.

He has no chance to start this season with the Pirates, but unless he regresses at Triple-A, everyone seems to think he'll be up with the big club in July.

Also, the Pirates aren't working him out at 1B this spring, which means that, for the moment, their plan is for him to play third.

Yeah, I guess I'll do it. I can't say if I'll actually keep the guy around long enough to see him get called up. We just finished our draft, and guys like Des Jennings and Ackley were taken, so it might be my last shot to grab him without paying anything more than a roster spot.

Not really. It's a pretty standard league, so there aren't many roster spots to burn. I pretty much need everyone to be active and playing if I'm going to compete.

Nick Swisher for instance might be the one guy I could afford to cut becuase he's not starting for me. But then again it's an OPS league and I think he'll be a nice fill-in worth having around.
