-- I called Scott Downs a top five closer while he has the job. Then I basically got labeled an idiot for it. Then I started backpedaling a little. But admit it -- you're wondering if I might have been right. He got the job done again on Sunday without much drama. Might get plenty of opportunities for a while, too. Jays are looking good.

-- Adam LaRoche goes yard twice in one game ... at PETCO! I showed a mathematician a chart contrasting LaRoche's previous Aprils with this one, and this was the unfortunate result:

-- Chris Davis homers again. Mike advised you to sell. I'm not so sure. He's hitting .316 over the last week, and I'm feeling pretty good about having him on two of my rosters right now.

-- Clayton Kershaw, who had me feeling all tingly with his 13-strikeout performance three starts back, now can't seem to locate worth a damn, and he's gotten blown up in two straight games. I'm benching him in my weekly lineup league this week.

-- Did Charlie Manuel accidentally give Raul Ibanez a full-time green light or something? He now has three stolen bases on the year, which is only one less than he had in the previous three seasons combined. For his owners, it's like getting a gift when it's not even your birthday.

-- Phil Hughes is expected to start for the Yankees Tuesday. He's been dealing in Triple-A, and I decided he was worth a pickup in my big-money league, where I'm struggling for pitching. Most roto-prognosticators are saying he's only around for the short term, but I found this interesting Joe Girardi quote in Saturday's Daily News: "You don't call a guy up to make one start; that's unfair to put that type of pressure on him. You hope he goes out, pitches very well and continues to pitch like he's been pitching down there. We plan on him being in our rotation."

In a standard Yahoo mixed league somebody dropped Mike Gonzalez. Should I use my #3 waiver priority pick to grab him, dumping B.J. Ryan. You seem pretty convinced about Downs and at least Gonzo seems to be sharing a closer job. Thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm convinced that Downs would make a great closer. I am nowhere near convinced that Toronto won't hand the job back to B.J. Ryan when he's deemed "healthy" in a few weeks. So it seems risky.

Although, why would you have to dump Ryan to make such a move? Your DL spots already filled up?

Also, Gonzo seems to be in a save time-share with Soriano right now. So let's not consider him a full-time closer until Soriano (inevitably) injures himself again.

I think I just gave you lots of things to think about without actually answering your question. That's how I roll.

Who else has advice for calibob? Speak up.

Scott Downs is trading for about $61on Protrade right now. I admit I have no idea what that actually means, but Lincecum is trading at $219 right now as a basis for comparison. But I wasn't calling you an idiot, Bob. Just a bit hyperbolic is all. All in fun, though. Believe me, I have no problems calling out actual idiots, which you certainly are not. I was just trying to uphold the high standards I expect of Hurler staff.

Calibob, go ahead and grab Gonzalez with that waiver pick unless you are in a league filled with risk takers/idiots whom you suspect might drop Matt Holliday or David Wright. He's gonna get some saves, and the time share will certainly favor Gonzo, as he's a better pitcher in the ninth than Soriano. Soriano got that save last week when Gonzo was brought into the eighth to face Dunn in a one run game. Gonzo's not a top ten closer, but he's certainly middle of the pack enough to jump on with that waiver pick. But do you have to jettison BJ Ryan? NO DL slot?

I think my head's going to explode trying to post this correctly. Downs is trading for sixty one dollars, Timmy's trading for two hundred and nineteen dollars...Ugh...Who's the idiot now, huh?(pointing fingers at self)

No, I would not drop B.J. Ryan for Gonzalez. I would drop someone else for him. Unless you have a team full of All-Stars, in which case you don't need to do anything but cruise control to victory, there is someone on your roster who is more "cuttable" than B.J. Ryan.

Adam LaRoche is the messiah.

ProTrade is like a stock market for athletes. Downs is up right because all the speculators saw that BJ Ryan wasn't right and there's was a good chance he'd lose his role. And now that Downs is closing they're selling high. He should start leveling off to his true value in ProTrade as the initial buzz wears off.

Skills wise I wouldn't say he's a top 5 closer but he's a solid 2nd tier closer with some upside and a tremendous value .

All that said, I picked him before the season started in the Hurler league. If you like him that much though Bob send an offer. How about Jose Reyes?

No worries, Kevin. Although, you actually can call me an idiot, and I still won't take it personally. Name-calling is what fantasy baseball is all about! (Whether between manager and manager or manager and player.)

Bob, I've already got Chris Carpenter on my one-man DL. In addition, I've got Marmol who's already injured, so I want some production.

What relief pitchers/closers do you have on this team? Ryan, Marmol ... who else?

Mike, it's a Yahoo league. I won't name off the starting players who I obviously can't drop, but I've got Brad Hawpe and Geovany Soto on my bench. In my rotation, my possible dropables are my 3-5 starters who include Randy Wolf, Max Scherzer of Johnny Cueto. Chris Carpenter is occupying my DL. I assume you'd suggest I drop Wolf but I actually love Dodgers pitchers in the weak NL West. Anyway, I would appreciate your thoughts.

I would be fine dropping Wolf, Scherzer, or Carpenter for Ryan. I think we're looking at a wasted season from Carpenter, and in a Yahoo standard format Wolf and Scherzer are basically streamers or fourth/fifth starter types.

Unless some new info has come to light about the seriousness of Ryan's injury, he's going to be back closing at some point. His contract is too huge to do otherwise.

Don't fall in love with Carpenter's one healthy start.

Good point. I went ahead and put the claim in for Gonzo, dropping Wolf. Thanks for the perspective.

Well, you've got two rock solid closers, so you didn't have to make the move for Gonzalez, but I see you took Mike's advice below, which I think was pretty wise.

Bob, the claim went through and I got Gonzo. So this week, he becomes my fourth healthy closer I use closers like an ATM card. I flip them for other players. For example, this year, I flipped Brad Ziegler for Ryan Zimmerman, who I flipped for Russell Martin. I threw in Fernando Rodney with Carl Crawford and picked up Manny Ramirez. That's why I like having extra closers. I'm already getting offers for Matt Capps.
