Middle relievers are killing me E-mail

My Hurler league team is currently a blight against humanity, and one of the biggest reasons why, shockingly, is because middle relievers have destroyed my team ERA and WHIP. We're not yet two weeks into the season, and I've already had four middle relievers get blown to pieces while in my starting lineup. I drafted Okajima because I always figure a dominant middle reliever is more valuable in a daily lineup league with a roomy max-innings limit than a junk starter. Okajima's ERA/WHIP with my team -- 18.00/4.00. I additionally drafted Balfour for that reason, along with the fact that he should be good for the occasional save the season. Balfour's ERA/WHIP with my team -- 20.25/3.75. Because I'm going to struggle with saves in this league, I also picked up Jon Rauch, who is presumably next in line if Qualls struggles. (At least, he was presumably next in line.) Rauch's ERA/WHIP with my team -- 16.20/3.00. Tired of this bullshit, I then cut Rauch for Grabow (which has actually worked out okay) and Okajima for Wheeler (uhh, not so much). Wheeler's ERA/WHIP with my team -- 18.00/2.50.

So despite the fact that I put together a very solid squad of value starters who have performed well thus far -- guys like Danks, Young and Volstod -- my ERA hovers around 6.00 and my WHIP around 1.60 because these middle relievers I keep throwing in my lineup are getting smacked around like Rihanna on a weekend getaway with Chris Brown. Hell, at this rate, I might be better off going with junk starters. They certainly couldn't do any worse.

I feel your pain. The past three days (82 at-bats), my batting average is .097.

I picked up Scott Downs because I'm struggling with saves and thought he would be next in line after B.J. Ryan. I've loved the boost to strikeouts, era and whip that he gives so much that I don't think I could quit him even if a real closer becomes available.

I wish I had Scott Downs. Already owned in this league. He's a great middle reliever to have, though, for all the reasons you mentioned.

The one year that Middle Relievers saved my season was when I picked them up in mid-July. I feel like relief pitchers are so unpredictable that it's dangerous to rely on any of them in the early months. Ace relievers can come out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly. Just look at Pat Neshek 2007-2008 or Shigetoshi Hasegawa 2003-2004.
