Mid-December. Christmas almost here. Only two months till the various fantasy-baseball services start going live. Yep, it's time to start blogging again ...

-- Needing a closer now that Jose Valverde is gone, the Astros yesterday traded for Matt Lindstrom, he of the 5.89 ERA last year. Which would make me really interested in rostering LaTroy Hawkins ... except, damn, Hawkins just signed with the Brewers. So now who's Houston's eighth-inning specialist/Matt Lindstrom replacement in waiting?

-- I don't really care where Jason Bay and Matt Holliday end up. I am, however, extremely curious about where Jason Marquis goes. Fantasy baseball does this to a person.

-- If Mike Lowell does indeed get traded to the Rangers, does that mean Lowell will serve as Chris Davis insurance? Or will Davis be serving as Mike Lowell insurance?

-- Jason Kendall still gets offered multiyear deals? Whaaa?!

Who you think closes: Lindstrom or Lyon? Also, with Capps gone, does Pit sign a FA closer or go with Hanrahan?

Tough call in Houston. I expect they'll go into spring training at least telling each pitcher that the job is an open competition. I'm going to guess they start the season with Lindstrom as the closer.

Pittsburgh definitely needs to sign at least one bullpen guy, but it seems unlikely they'll get someone with more closing experience than Hanrahan. (Although a good bit of that experience includes sucking completely at the job.)

More on this stuff in tomorrow's Bits ...
