ESPN registration now open; Yahoo coming next week E-mail

ESPN has opened registration for the 2009 season. Click right here to sign up your league for their free service, which apparently gives you the option of holding an auction draft this year. (Neat!) Meanwhile, Yahoo's Brandon Funston left a comment at this blog post, saying that they plan on launching sometime next week. Here's his comment in full:

Ladies and gents,
Let me set the record straight as much as I possibly can. The plan is for us to launch next week. As I mentioned in a previous post, we have some new features for this season and care is being taken that we launch without any hiccups. Just to give you an idea of some of those features:
Keeper leagues
Mock drafts
Expanded playoff options
Custom draft order
Draft applet that debuted in football
There's more, but that's a sampling. Ideally, we'd launch without having to give a specific date because you never know when last-minute details are going to bite you in the butt. But clearly the desire for some kind of clarity within this blog is running high. So, if everything goes according to plan, we'll be live mid-week of the coming week.
If the need to draft a league now and sit on it for two months is so great that you're willing to switch allegiances to another company, well that's a shame. We'd hope that a few extra days in early February is not the basis by which you decide which product to use.
Ok, so that's the official unofficial word. The Brad Evans inposter early on in this mock that said we'd be live on Feb. 5 had no clue what he was talking about.

"Custom draft order" is interesting. You've been able to customize your draft order for years now, as long as you used a serpentine draft where the order reversed every other round. I wonder if he's talking about being able to customize it beyond even that, for example allowing for the trading of draft picks. That would be a nice feature.

Will Matt Wieters be added to the Yahoo game prior to the start the year? Let's start the bets!

I'm saying he'll be there. Yahoo may not go too deep with the prospect pool at the beginning of the season, but the top five to 10 guys are usually there.

It sounds good, but I've been burned in the past by Yahoo's player pool. Can I check out their pool before creating a league?

It would be nice if Yahoo made it so when you set up a custom league format, say using OBP and Holds or something, their player rankings would automatically re-calculate, like Adam Dunn and James Shields would move up higher on the list.

Why don't you guys at FH host a league for all the regular readers? Could have Taylor's Railers, Bock's Rocks, Aubain's Cocaine, Lea's Fleas...

@ Russ: I don't think you can check out the player pool before creating a league, but I wouldn't swear to it.

@ Sandon: The plan is the hold the first inaugural Fantasy Hurler league this year. Frequent posters will have the bets chance of securing spots. More info soon.
