With millions of Americans now playing a variety of fantasy sports year-round, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood took notice. Which brings us to The League, a new half-hour comedy that debuts Thursday night at 10:30 p.m. on FX. The show centers on a group of friends who, each year, take part in a super-competitive fantasy football league but will also explore "friendship, marriage, parenting, and growing up ... or refusing to grow up." Hey, those are all things I know a little something about. Sounds interesting. The question is: Will it actually be any good?
Well, the pedigree's not bad. Co-creator Jeff Schaffer has worked as a producer on both Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. So if the dude isn't excessively funny in his own right, he's at least been in the room with funny and knows what funny smells like. And, hey, Paul Scheer, from Human Giant and Best Week Ever, is in the cast, which certainly doesn't hurt. I figure a three-episode commitment is in order, so my DVR is set. I'm curious to see how big a part fantasy football actually plays in the show. And how accurate and/or out-of-date the fantasy-related sections are.
